Wrestler of the Week - Week One

Wrestling does things to you. As a fan of pro wrestling, the chances are you’ve went through every emotion that’s feasibly possible whilst watching this beautiful sport. Whether it be sheer euphoria or sickening sadness, you’ll always feel something when it comes to wrestling. However, these emotions wouldn’t be real and the stories wouldn’t affect us as much as they did if it wasn’t for those who train every day of the year and put their own safety on the line in order to entertain us and tell us those stories. Every week, I plan to write about one individual who has caught the attention of the wrestling world in that particular week, and how they have made the impact that they have.

I thought it apt to kick off this series of articles by recognizing someone who has made an impact close to home in the past week. By now, those who have a vested interest in the Scottish wrestling scene will have heard of the return of Drew Galloway at ICW on Sunday. The Ayrshire man, formerly known as Drew Mcintyre in the WWE, makes his comeback at a time when Scottish wrestling is flying, with Insane Championship Wrestling leading the charge to show the world what talent we possess in this country.

Drew Galloway was released from WWE earlier this year, despite the fact that most fans knew what calibre of talent he was, and how misused he has been for the past few years, we were gutted about him being released, believing that his big push was always coming up. However, we knew that WWE’s loss was our gain, and we expected him to make an appearance back home at some point. What we didn’t expect was how soon this would happen, and just how much of an impact his return what have. In front of a sell out 1200 capacity at the 02 ABC in Glasgow, the lights went dim, and when they came back on, Drew was standing in the ring, coming to the aid of long-time friend and ICW champion Jack Jester, to fight off the New Age Kliq. No comedy gimmick, no air instruments, just the Chosen One. After clearing out the NAK, he turned on Jester, and cut one of the best promos you’re likely to hear this year. Galloway wants to be back in Scottish wrestling, and he wants to be the ICW champion, so that he can further ICW as a promotion to the stage where it gets on TV and beyond that. He wants the world to realize that when it looks him in the eye, and when it looks at ICW, it’s seeing the best in the world. I thought that only being present in that moment is what made it so special, but watching it back, I still get the same goosebumps as I did watching and hearing it first-hand. Already, the likes of Zack Ryder and Mick Foley have shared the video of Drew’s ICW return, opening the company to even more exposure. There is now a follow up to BBC’s “Insane Fight Club” in the works, with Sunday’s show being used to film footage for the program. Drew Galloway is back to take Scottish wrestling to the next level, and for that reason, he is my first wrestler of the week.
